The bronze sculpture of “Crest of the Wave” by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth is available at Pook & Pook

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, September 29, 2021 / – Lead the second session of Pook & Pook, Inc. The next Americana & International auction is Crest of the Wave. It is a bronze sculpture by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, one of the leading American sculptors of the early 20th century. She is known for her energetic pieces that capture athletic nudes in motion, such as Joy of the Waters. It shows the Slovenian model Desha Delteil spreading her foot in a cold snap. After a customer saw Joy of the Waters in a neighbor’s backyard, he wanted a version for himself. Frishmuth therefore created the modified piece Crest of the Wave in 1926 to avoid any sense of competition between his neighboring clients. The available bronze is one of 22 casts produced by the Gorham Foundry.

The next sale will also feature a bronze sculpture of a man’s head by one of Harriet Whitney Frishmuth’s contemporaries, Elie Nadelman. Subject wears a rounded hat casually tilted to the side. His features are clean and defined with a particularly pointed chin. Born in Poland, Nadelman amassed a large collection of folk art while sculpting almost exclusively in ancient Greek style. The auction catalog includes bronze pieces from other key artists of the 20th century, including Malvina Hoffman, William Zorach, Eduardo Paolozzi and Dame Elisabeth Frink.

Several remarkable works of art are also on offer. Among them is a Mickey Mouse color silkscreen print from Andy Warhol’s Myths series. Launched in 1981, this series immortalized the icons of American pop culture and covered them in diamond dust. The available print is numbered 147 out of 200. Collectors will also find a drawing by Damien Hirst which depicts a skull, butterfly and shark, as well as a landscape painting by Eric Sloane. Antique furniture will also be auctioned, including a tall Queen Anne walnut chest, a three-part US Federal Secretary, and a Chippendale marble and birch side table.
