Innovative Laboratory of Architecture & Art / CLAB
- Area :
Text description provided by the architects. The INNOVATIVE LAB of ARCHITECTURE & ART is CLAB’s new studio in Qionglai, Chengdu City, and it is a space built and operated by architects, artists, scientific research institute and rural artisans. Its name reveals at least three experimental “spirits”: the experience of construction, the experience of the movement of rural reform and the experience of innovation of social relations.
This space is built of clay in traditional material. A scientific research team from the Chinese University of Hong Kong has provided mature technical support for the clay construction of this project, which has greatly improved the technical limit of traditional clay, so that it can be used in the earthquake fortification areas at eight degrees. , can be used as a structure (no maintenance system). It will also improve life security in rural areas.
This technology insists on manual clay-making in order to adapt to the mode of social work in the countryside and to be accepted and spread by the vast rural areas of China. The entire construction process is also a culture program for modern clay craftsmen. Local craftsmen will take up this technique when returning to their home countries, build their houses by hand, taking into account the reality of the underdeveloped rural society, and bring a modern meaning to the historical narrative.
At the end of the laboratory, we will use the residence of architects and artists to mutually nourish contemporary knowledge and rural nature and experiment with a possible innovative social relationship. This is the meaning of the practice of the INNOVATIVE LAB of ARCHITECTURE & ART.
